Vitamins

Nicotinic Acid

Also called Flush niacin

Nicotinic acid is the form of B3 used in cardiovascular trials. It reliably raises HDL, lowers triglycerides, and modestly lowers LDL. The flushing effect can be minimised by starting low, taking it with food, or using extended-release formulations under a doctor's care. It is not appropriate for casual supplementation at high doses.

Best for

Lipid management under medical supervision

Absorption

High

Tolerability

Flushing is common; liver monitoring needed at high doses

Typical timing

With meals; take lipid-lowering doses at night

How to take Nicotinic Acid

A typical dose of Vitamin B3 (Niacin): 14–16 mg RDA; 500–2,000 mg for lipid effects under medical supervision. Best timing: With meals; take lipid-lowering doses at night. The form you choose mainly affects absorption and how easily it sits with your stomach, not the overall dose.
