Hydration

Adequate fluids and electrolytes.

Staying adequately hydrated supports energy, cognition, digestion, and physical performance.

Why it matters

Water is involved in nearly every bodily process, from circulation and temperature control to nutrient transport. Even mild dehydration can reduce concentration, mood, and exercise performance.

Hydration is also about electrolytes, not just water. Sweat, heat, and high activity raise the need for sodium, potassium, and magnesium, which is why some supplements are taken alongside fluids rather than instead of them.

Putting it into practice

  • Drink to thirst and aim for pale-yellow urine.
  • Increase fluids with heat, altitude, and exercise.
  • Replace electrolytes during long or intense sweating.
  • Spread intake across the day rather than all at once.
